University at Buffalo Reporter - January 14, 2016
Hawaii made headlines by becoming the first U.S. state to raise the
minimum legal age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products and electronic
cigarettes to 21 from 18.
But in a newly published article, a
UB tobacco expert argues that Hawaii's decision is only one part of
the solution, and that the new law incorrectly lumps e-cigarettes and
lower-risk smokeless tobacco products (Swedish snus) in with the much
more harmful nicotine cigarettes.

The University of Hawaii Kaleo - November 16, 2015
A few weeks ago, I was waiting outside of a restaurant to be seated.
As two men, who were also waiting, were having a conversation and vaping,
the smothering odor of strawberry-banana and blueberries began to permeate
the air. Not only did it make my nose itch, causing me to sneeze uncontrollably,
but I began to feel nauseous from the intoxicating scent. Act 19 states:
In a report issued this month on workplace tobacco policies, the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health warns about the secondhand
exposure to nicotine from e-cigarettes. Nicotine is addictive and toxic
and harmful even at low doses. It is an acute irritant and capable of
causing headache and nausea. For pregnant women, nicotine can transfer
to and harm the developing fetus. As reported by Hawaii News Now, the
Hina Mauka drug treatment facility in K neohe helps more than 2,500
people annually and is seeing a growing number of patients who report
they were vaping methamphetamine and other dangerous drugs. According
to Alan Johnson, president and CEO of the facility, almost any drug
that can be turned into a liquid can be vaped.

Governor to Ban Electronic Cigarettes
Clapway - April 25, 2015
Governor David Ige has signed Act 19 (HB940) into law. The bill will
ban electronic cigarettes anywhere regular cigarette smoking is banned.
The bill states that it would confuse the public and create chaos in
the workforce. Not having this ban would also cause a problem with the
progress of an establishment being considered fully smoke free. The
bill also states that electronic cigarette vapor can be just as harmful
to the general public as tobacco cigarettes because children and pregnant
women would still breathe in the aerosolized nicotine and other toxic
substances that travel through the air.

Hotel & Condominium Smoking Policies
In November of 2006, the state of Hawaii instituted a strict new smoking law.
As a result, many Hawaii hotels declared all of their guest rooms to be smoke-free.
This has been a boon to non-smokers, of course, who no longer have to enter a
hotel room with that telltale odor of "smokers past" lingering in the
air. However, smokers aren't happy with such policies, as they won't be able to
stay at smoke-free hotels unless they stash their habit for the length of their
stay, or only smoke "off premises" or in designated areas, which are
usually outside any public area in the hotel, e.g. places like parking lots and
other outside areas that are at least 20 feet from any doors or windows.
