The Landscape of Smokefree Laws
The American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation (ANRF) is proud to launch our full suite of Interactive Smokefree Maps! After months of work, they’re now ready to display on our website. For years, ANRF has published maps of smokefree laws around the United States. These were principally designed for our partners, members, and advocates to print out, or to be viewed as PDFs in a web browser. Now, thanks to ArcGIS Online’s geographic imaging software, we can illustrate the landscape of America’s smokefree protections as interactive displays on our website. You can scroll across the country, zoom in on regions with densely concentrated smokefree laws, and view the smokefree status of individual communities.
We will continue to publish printer-friendly PDFs of all of our maps. From now on, though, they will be accompanied by interactive maps hosted on our website, and updated with the latest laws every three months, along with the rest of our lists.
These maps include:
- A map showing what percentage of each state’s population is protected from secondhand smoke in workplaces, restaurants, and bars.
- Maps showing the legal status of marijuana in each state, and which states/cities restrict cannabis smoking or vaping in public places.
- Maps of restrictions on e-cigarette use, and states and municipalities whose smokefree protections include e-cigarettes and cannabis.
Researchers have used our policy surveillance data to study many commercial tobacco control policy issues including how smokefree protections improve cardiovascular health to their positive economic effects to the disposal of cigarette butts. Our maps have also helped advocates demonstrate to local city councils just how prevalent strong smokefree laws are across the U.S.
Big Tobacco never lets up, and neither do we. ANRF uses every tool at our disposal to keep you informed. And there’s more to come! Keep your eyes peeled for new maps that are more detailed, more informative, and more valuable for our coalition partners as we fight for a smokefree world.
Send us a message here if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments.
Our lists and maps, and now our interactive maps too, are updated on a quarterly basis.
Contact Maggie Hopkins, Director of Data Management and Analysis, if you have questions about our lists and maps.
The fight for smokefree air continues, and we look forward to what we can accomplish together.
