Thumbs Up to New Mexico, celebrating 10 years of clean air. The Dee Johnson Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking in indoor public places and workplaces including restaurants, bars and nightclubs. New Mexico’s Clean Indoor Act was named after the late first lady of New Mexico Dee Johnson, in honor of her successful fight to ban smoking in the state Capitol. Starting in 1994,she faced off with the tobacco industry and legislative leadership, many of whom smoked, in her efforts to prohibit smoking inside the roundhouse. In 2002, after a seven-year fight, the Capitol became smoke-free.
Thumbs Up PrideFest Milwaukee will include three nonsmoking areas on the festival grounds this year. Designated nonsmoking areas include the Exercising Pride: PrideFest Health and Wellness section, the Youth Area, and the Children and Family Stage. Festival organizers also request that attendees refrain from smoking in the new PrideFit area (featuring yoga, dance, and movement) and in the History and Stonewall tents. See story
Thumbs Down to Columbus Georgia’s Councilor Walker Garrett for calling Breathe Easy Columbus’ smoking poll very unreliable. 69 percent of Columbus voters support a city ordinance to prevent smoking in public places and 83 percent believe employees should be protected from exposure to second-hand smoke while on the job. Thumbs Up to Champlain Centre, operated by Pyramid Management Group LLC, will be celebrating its five-year anniversary as a smoke-free property. The policy, which was implemented in 2012, covered both inside and out and includes all entrances, hallways, sidewalks, loading-dock areas, parking lots. Newsclip
