The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Will Transition All Kewadin Casino Locations to Smokefree Today

November 11, 2024

Sault Ste. Marie, MI – Today, all Kewadin Casino facilities owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will transition to a 100% smokefree indoor policy. The policy, adopted by the Sault Tribe Board of Directors last month, will take effect in all five of the Tribe’s casinos – a move that the Sault Tribe says will benefit the health and safety of employees and patrons alike.

Clinton Isham, Tribal Relations Consultant for American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, released the following statement: “The Sault Tribe’s decision to transition to smokefree across all Kewadin casinos underscores a deep commitment to the health and safety of the Upper Peninsula community. By joining over 1,000 casinos, including more than 140 Tribal gaming properties, in going smokefree, Kewadin Casinos have set a powerful example for other gaming facilities to follow suit. This decision not only aligns with the overwhelming public preference for smokefree environments but also paves the way for a safer, healthier experience that will benefit everyone who visits or works at the Kewadin Casinos. Beyond supporting the needs of its community, the Sault Tribe only stands to gain business by transitioning to smokefree, as guests are more likely to visit Kewadin Casinos now that they can be assured of its safety.”
